Launch Meeting

Around 80 local residents including pensioners, students and trade unionists turned out on a rainy Monday night for the launch meeting of York Unity, a community campaign to oppose the fascist BNP.

The meeting heard speeches from Sabby Dhalu from the national Unite Against Fascism campaign and from Cllr David Wilde, a former Lord Mayor of York. All agreed that we need to reach out with confidence to the anti-racist majority in York and challenge the BNP head-on. The meeting voted toestablish York Unity as a continuing campaign and to affiliate to Unite Against Fascism. Further meetings and action including a local march and rally are planned in the run-up to the Euro elections in June.

Statement of Support

The meeting called with this Statement Of Support

We the undersigned condemn the recent rise in BNP activity in York. The BNP are a fascist party, and we believe their actions are a plain attempt to fuel racism, religious hatred and violence in the area.

We therefore support the launch of York Unity and give our backing to their launch meeting on Monday 16th February.
